但传统的磁混凝沉淀工艺存在以下缺点：水力停留时间长，占地面积较大；需要出水TP<0，5mg/L，则药剂投加量很大，增加水处理成本，而达到**地表水Ⅳ类水标准，需要更多的化学药剂，如PAC、PAM等药剂的使用，城市废水可能会受到化学组成成分、带电性能、亲水性能等多方面的影响，根据不同混凝剂对水质的情况影响，注意pH值的范围，不同pH值的铝盐水解的产物形态不同，在水中可以实现离子形式的存在，根据混凝效果，注意水温对混凝效果的影响。

根据混凝机理，加入混凝剂主要是通过改变胶体或悬浮颗粒的表面性质，使胶体或絮团的吸引能大于排斥能而促进凝聚，而加入絮凝剂的作用主要是通过架桥作用使颗粒聚集增大的，磁混凝工艺是一种较速沉淀技术，以投加微米级惰性高密度微粒（微砂、Fe3O4）作为絮凝核，在较优水力条件下形成高浓度和大密度复合絮体，该复合絮体在较短时间完成沉淀过程，使水体*得到净化，能够有效去除COD、总磷、氨氮等污染物质，提供较好的出水水质。

磁混凝工艺被广泛的用于市政污水提标改造，对COD、BOD、氨氮、总氮、色度有提标需求的工程，黑臭河道整治、工业废水深度除磷、除浊等领域，将混凝、絮凝反应池与沉淀池合建，且由于沉淀过程中无上向流扰动，沉淀停留时间可进一步缩短至5-10min，因此，设备占地面积可做到连续流磁混凝池的50%左右，常规混凝沉淀池的20%左右，结构紧凑性进一步得到强化，新建项目或改扩建项目的一次性投资成本因此可以大幅降低，而系统运行成本与原工艺相当。
